Formatt Hitech 100x100mm (4x4) ND 2.4 (8stops)
Formatt Hitech 100x100mm (4x4) ND 2.4 (8stops) | Extend exposures in daylight
Its defining choice is the 100x100mm square format: it gives photographers a broad filter surface to position in a square-filter workflow. This is a neutral-density filter, designed to reduce the light reaching your camera without changing the scene’s lighting. It suits landscape photographers and others who want to make movement part of an image, rather than freeze every detail. Use it to lengthen exposures in daylight for softer-looking water or drifting cloud, or to make a slower shutter speed practical in a bright scene. The square format is helpful when positioning a filter is part of how you compose the frame. This is a strong-density option, so it’s most useful when you need a meaningful change to your exposure time, not just a small adjustment. If your aim is to keep fast action sharp, this isn’t the filter to reach for; its purpose is to let you work with a slower exposure.
Specialist Note
For photographers framing waterfalls or cloud movement, this is the kind of filter that can give motion time to show. Its ND 2.4 rating means an eight-stop reduction: with ISO and aperture unchanged, a metered 1/125 sec exposure becomes roughly 2 sec. That can turn ripples into a smoother flow while keeping the rest of your exposure settings steady. The 100x100mm square size suits a square-filter workflow, where you can position the filter as you compose. I’d choose it when a modest light reduction won’t give you enough shutter time. Eight stops is a strong cut, though, so moving subjects will blur rather than freeze.
