Formatt Hitech 165x200mm (6.5x7.87) ND Heg 0.9 (3st) | Control bright light with three stops

Without an ND filter, you have to manage bright light by changing your aperture, shutter speed or ISO. This Formatt Hitech filter reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you more freedom to keep the exposure settings you want. It’s for photographers who need that extra control when a scene is brighter than their chosen settings allow, including landscape and architectural photographers working in strong daylight. A longer shutter speed can give moving water a softer appearance, while keeping your aperture where you want it can help preserve your chosen depth of field. The filter’s rectangular format gives you a broad surface to position in front of the lens. That makes it suited to a considered setup rather than a quick adjustment made through camera controls alone. If your aim is simply to darken an image, changing exposure settings may be enough; this filter is useful when you want to hold on to a particular setting.

Specialist Note

A three-stop reduction won’t turn every bright midday scene into a very long exposure, so it’s worth being clear about what you need from it. For controlled exposure changes, though, this 0.9 filter is a practical amount of light reduction: for example, a shutter speed of 1/125 sec becomes about 1/15 sec, with aperture and ISO unchanged. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers who want a little more time for moving water, or to anyone trying to keep a preferred aperture in bright conditions. The 165 × 200 mm size gives you a broad rectangular filter to work with, but it also takes more room to handle than a small filter. It suits a deliberate setup best.
