When a bright sky is pushing your landscape exposure too far for the ground, this Formatt Hitech graduated ND filter gives you a way to hold back the sky while keeping the land brighter. It’s a rectangular, hard-edge neutral-density filter measuring 85 × 110 mm (3.35 × 4.33 inches). Its 0.9 density reduces light by three stops at the darker part of the filter, with a defined transition between the filtered and clear areas. That hard edge is most at home with a clear, fairly level horizon, such as a coastline or open field; it’s less suited to a skyline or mountain ridge that breaks unevenly across the frame. For landscape photographers working with a strong brightness difference between sky and foreground, it offers a practical way to manage that contrast while making the exposure.
Working with the hard edge
Place the transition along the boundary between the bright area and the land you want to retain. The more level that boundary is in your composition, the easier it is to keep the darker portion of the filter from crossing onto important details. The three-stop reduction gives you a meaningful correction when the sky is much brighter, but it’s still a graduated filter: the effect changes across the frame rather than darkening the whole image evenly. If the scene has an irregular skyline, the defined transition may also darken parts of it, so consider your composition before positioning the filter.
Specialist Note
The rectangular 85 × 110 mm format gives you space to position the transition over a horizon rather than fixing it to the centre of the image. I’d consider it for open water or a broad, flat landscape, where the hard edge can follow a clean boundary. The 0.9 density takes three stops from the bright part, which can help keep a pale sky in check while you expose for the land; as a guide, three stops turns 1/125 sec into about 1/15 sec in that area. It’s a focused tool, not a subtle all-over ND filter, and the hard transition can be a poor match for jagged ridgelines.
