Formatt Hitech FC ND 100x150mm (4x6) NDSEG 1.5 (5stops) | Balance bright skies

Without a graduated filter, a bright sky can push you into choosing between detail in the clouds and a well-exposed foreground. This Formatt Hitech NDSEG filter is made to help balance that difference in a single frame. Its 1.5 density provides five stops of reduction at the darker part of the filter, while the graduated design lets you place that reduction over the brighter area of the scene. It suits landscape photographers and anyone working with a strong change in brightness across the frame. The 100 × 150 mm format gives you a broad rectangular filter to position over the scene. It’s most useful when the bright and dark areas meet along a reasonably clear boundary. For evenly lit scenes, a graduated filter has little to correct; this one is a targeted tool for managing contrast, rather than an all-over neutral density filter.

Where it helps

• Place the denser area over a bright sky to bring its exposure closer to the land below.
• Use it when you want to retain detail across a high-contrast landscape without relying on separate exposures.

Practical exposure approach

As a reference, five stops of reduction turns a 1/250-second exposure into roughly 1/8 second in the filter’s densest area, with aperture and ISO unchanged. The graduated section means that reduction eases across the frame rather than applying equally everywhere. Position the transition where the scene changes in brightness, then judge the balance in your composition. A jagged skyline or tall objects crossing the transition can make a graduated filter less straightforward to place.
