Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter

Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 1.5 (5 stops) Filter | Hold back bright skies without darkening the whole frame

A bright sky can push you into choosing between keeping its detail and getting a usable exposure for the darker foreground. The Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 1.5 filter addresses that imbalance by placing neutral density across only part of the image. It’s suited to landscape photographers and anyone working with scenes where one area is much brighter than another, such as an open sky above land or water. The graduated design lets you reduce light in the brighter area while keeping the foreground more open than it would be with an evenly dense ND filter. Its five-stop rating gives substantial light reduction where the filter is darkest, so it’s particularly useful when the brightness gap is hard to manage with exposure alone. The result depends on placing the graduation to suit the scene; it’s a practical tool for deliberate framing, not a way to darken every part of a picture equally.

Where the graduation helps

A fairly level horizon is the straightforward case: position the darker area over the bright sky and keep the transition near the horizon. With an irregular skyline, the boundary can cross trees, buildings or mountain peaks, making the difference in brightness visible in the wrong place. That’s when careful framing and filter placement matter. The graduated format is most useful when the scene has a clear division between brighter and darker areas, rather than light scattered unpredictably across the frame.
