Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 100x100mm (4x4) ND 2.1 (7stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 100x100mm (4x4) ND 2.1 (7stops) | Create longer exposures in bright light
Without an ND filter, bright conditions can leave you choosing between a fast shutter speed and the aperture you want. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest gives you another option: reduce the light reaching the camera so you can use a slower shutter or a wider aperture while keeping exposure under control. It suits photographers working with moving water, passing clouds or other motion they want to render smoothly, as well as anyone looking to manage depth of field in bright daylight. The main appeal is control over exposure when the available light would otherwise dictate your settings. It’s a considered tool for deliberate compositions, rather than a filter that changes the subject for you. Think through the framing and exposure you want first; the filter helps you get there when the light is getting in the way.
Working with a strong ND filter
For a long exposure, settle the composition and focus before making the final exposure adjustment. Then account for the light reduction in your shutter speed and review the result. This keeps the process straightforward: decide how you want motion to look, make the exposure change, and check whether the scene has the softness or blur you intended. If you’re using the filter to keep a wider aperture in daylight, take the same measured approach and check the exposure after fitting it.
Specialist Note
At a metered 1/125 sec, I’d use this filter as a starting point for an exposure of roughly one second: its 7-stop reduction makes that kind of shutter-speed change possible. The 100x100mm square format is useful to know when planning your filter setup, so make sure your working arrangement is built around that size. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers wanting to soften moving water, or to anyone shaping motion in a bright scene. One honest point: a long exposure can blur moving subjects, so it’s not the tool for freezing action.
