Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Create longer exposures in bright light
To soften moving water or turn passing traffic into a gentle blur, a five-stop neutral density filter gives you room to use a slower shutter speed in bright conditions. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter reduces the light reaching your camera by five stops, and its 105mm size suits photographers whose filter setup is designed for that size. It’s especially useful for landscape and city scenes where you want motion in the frame without letting bright daylight dictate a very fast exposure. You can also use the light reduction to keep a wider aperture in brighter surroundings. The effect depends on your starting exposure and the movement you want to show, so it’s worth metering with the filter in place and adjusting from there. This is a focused tool for controlling exposure, rather than a filter that changes the scene’s colour or composition for you.
Putting five stops to work
Five stops gives you a practical shift in shutter speed: a starting exposure of 1/30 sec becomes about 1 sec with the filter in place, assuming the other exposure settings stay unchanged. That’s a useful range for showing movement in water while retaining detail in the surrounding landscape. For moving traffic, try a slower shutter speed and adjust to taste; the amount of blur depends on how quickly the vehicles cross the frame. Because the filter cuts the light by a set amount, choose your shutter speed or aperture with the intended result in mind, then compensate with the other exposure settings.
Specialist Note
The broad 105mm format is the detail to plan around: it calls for a filter setup made for that size, so think about your holder before building it into a kit. The five-stop reduction is where this filter earns its place. For a water scene metered at 1/30 sec, you can work toward roughly 1 sec without changing aperture or ISO, which can bring out the flow while keeping the landscape still. It also suits city scenes when you want passing traffic to blur rather than freeze. I’d choose it for deliberate exposure control; if you need only a small shutter-speed adjustment, five stops may be more than you want.
