Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Three stops for longer exposures
The defining choice is the 52mm filter size: it’s made for lenses with a matching 52mm filter thread, so the size is easy to identify when choosing a filter for a particular lens. This is an ND filter for photographers who want to reduce the light reaching the camera and gain more control over exposure. It suits landscape and outdoor work where you want a slower shutter speed to show movement, or where you need to manage bright light while working with your chosen exposure settings. The named ND 0.9 strength corresponds to three stops of light reduction, a practical amount for extending exposure without making the change hard to plan. If you’re building a filter kit, the key is matching the 52mm size to the lens you intend to use it on.
Specialist Note
At ND 0.9, you can plan the exposure change before you take the shot: three stops means an exposure time eight times longer. For example, a shutter speed of 1/125 sec becomes roughly 1/15 sec, which can give moving water or passing clouds a softer look. The 52mm size is useful when your lens has that exact filter thread; it also makes the fit straightforward to identify when selecting a filter. I’d point this out to photographers who want a measured, predictable reduction rather than an unknown amount of darkening. It’s a specific strength, so it won’t provide the wider adjustment of a variable-density filter.
