Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Slow shutter speeds in daylight
To turn moving water into a soft blur or give passing clouds more presence, you need to cut the light reaching your lens so you can use a longer exposure. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter is a neutral density filter that reduces exposure by four stops. It suits photographers who want more control over shutter speed in bright conditions, rather than letting the available light dictate a fast exposure. That extra control can help show movement in a landscape, or give you room to use a wider aperture in daylight while keeping your chosen shutter speed. It’s a straightforward tool for shaping exposure, not a filter that adds an effect of its own. Choose it for scenes where movement or depth of field matters, and where reducing the light is the practical way to get the exposure you want.
Specialist Note
Bright light can leave you with a shutter speed that freezes every ripple, even when you want water to look smooth. This filter cuts exposure by four stops, so, for example, a starting speed of 1/60 sec can become 1/4 sec at the same aperture and ISO. That’s a useful range for showing movement in a stream; use a steady support to keep the rest of the scene sharp. Its 52mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread, so check the thread size on the lens you plan to use. It also suits daylight portraits when you want to trade some of those stops for a wider aperture. The effect depends on the light and subject movement, so it won’t create a long-exposure look in every scene.
