Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 0.3 (1 Stop) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 0.3 (1 Stop) Filter | Make small exposure adjustments
The defining choice is its 58mm size: this filter is made for a lens with a matching 58mm filter thread, giving you a straightforward way to reduce light without changing your framing. Its ND 0.3 rating cuts the light by one stop, a modest adjustment rather than a heavy darkening effect. That makes the Formatt Hitech Firecrest useful when you want a little more control over exposure: you can choose a slower shutter speed or keep a wider aperture when the unfiltered exposure would push you toward a different setting. It suits photographers who want measured control for moving water, gently blurred motion, or a slightly wider aperture in bright conditions. It can help preserve the look of an open aperture or nudge a shutter speed toward visible movement, while keeping the exposure change easy to calculate. Treat it as a one-stop adjustment and build your exposure around that. It’s a simple, specific tool, best when one stop is all you need; it isn’t intended to create long exposures by itself in strong daylight.
Specialist Note
Exposure comes down by one stop, so setup stays simple: meter normally, fit the filter, then double the shutter time or open the aperture by one stop. For example, 1/60 sec becomes 1/30 sec at the same ISO and aperture. I’d recommend this 58mm Firecrest to someone after a small, predictable adjustment rather than a heavy ND effect. It can take the edge off bright conditions or add a touch of movement to a stream. Its ND 0.3 strength is deliberately modest, so don’t expect it alone to turn a bright daytime scene into a very long exposure. Match the 58mm size to your lens thread.
