Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter | Create longer exposures in daylight
Bright daylight can make a long exposure impractical: even with your camera set to its lowest ISO, the shutter may still need to be too fast to show movement. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter reduces the light reaching the camera by 9 stops, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed. It suits photographers who want to soften moving water, blur passing clouds or make other motion more visible in a still image. It can also help when you want to use a wider aperture in bright conditions. The 77mm size is for lenses with a matching 77mm filter thread, so check the thread size on the lens you plan to use. This filter is best when you want a substantial reduction in light for deliberate exposure effects; it’s a strong adjustment, rather than a subtle one. Choose your composition and exposure with the filter’s nine-stop effect in mind.
Specialist Note
“Can I use this Firecrest ND 2.7 to turn a daytime water shot into a long exposure?” Yes: its 9-stop reduction gives you much more time for the water to blur. As a guide, if your unfiltered exposure is 1/30 sec, adding nine stops brings it to about 17 seconds. That’s a useful starting point for showing movement in a stream or waterfall; adjust from there to suit the light and the effect you want. The 77mm diameter matters at the lens: it needs a 77mm filter thread. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want visibly softened motion or more freedom to use a wide aperture outdoors. Just remember that nine stops is a sizeable exposure change, so take a fresh exposure reading with the filter in place.
