Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 82mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Gain control over shutter speed
At a bright waterside scene, you may want a slower shutter speed to soften the movement of water without changing the framing. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 0.9 is a neutral density filter that reduces the light reaching your camera by three stops, giving you room to lengthen exposure in bright conditions. Its 82mm diameter is the key fit detail: it’s for a lens with a matching 82mm filter thread. This filter suits photographers who want a fixed, moderate reduction in light for deliberate exposure choices, rather than a variable adjustment. You can use the extra exposure time to give moving subjects a smoother appearance, or use the reduction to work with a wider aperture in strong light. The effect is set at three stops, so it’s best when that amount of light reduction suits the scene.
Specialist Note
The 82mm diameter is the first practical detail to settle: your lens needs an 82mm filter thread, so this is a natural fit for a lens you already use at that size. The ND 0.9 rating means three stops less light, which gives you a useful, predictable change rather than an open-ended adjustment. For a stream, for example, a shutter speed of 1/30 sec becomes roughly 1/4 sec with the same exposure settings, giving moving water more time to blur. It also suits bright scenes where you want a wider aperture. My honest caveat: three stops is a fixed amount, so it won’t cover every lighting situation.
