Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter | Create long exposures in daylight
Long exposures in daylight can turn moving water into a soft blur while keeping the rest of a landscape crisp. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 95mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter reduces the light reaching your camera by 10 stops, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed in bright conditions. It’s a specialist tool for landscape photographers, seascape shooters and anyone who wants to show movement rather than freeze it. Try it with a waterfall, passing traffic or clouds moving across a view; the subject’s motion becomes part of the image. The ND 3 rating describes the filter’s density, while 95mm identifies its size for choosing a matching filter setup. This is a substantial light reduction, so it’s particularly suited to deliberate exposures where you can compose carefully and give the shutter time to work. It won’t create motion in a still subject, but it gives moving elements time to register.
Specialist Note
This filter makes slow-shutter work in bright daylight possible without relying on a very small aperture. Its 10-stop reduction is substantial: as a simple exposure guide, a 1/1000-second shutter speed becomes about one second, giving moving water time to blur. For a waterfall or a stream, compose on the scene and use a tripod to keep the stationary details sharp during that longer exposure. The 95mm size is the key practical detail when choosing your filter arrangement; use a holder or lens setup that accepts that diameter. I’d choose it for planned landscape work rather than quick, handheld moments—the long exposure is the point, but it asks for a steady setup.
