Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 0.3 (1 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 0.3 (1 Stop) | Add a little control over exposure
Bright conditions can leave you with a shutter speed that’s too fast for the movement you want to show, or an aperture that’s narrower than you’d prefer. This neutral density filter reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you a little more room to adjust exposure without changing the scene’s lighting. It suits photographers who want a measured adjustment rather than a strong reduction: for example, to soften the movement of water or clouds, or to gain a little flexibility with aperture in bright light. The effect is deliberately modest, so it’s best thought of as a small exposure adjustment, not a way to create very long exposures on its own. If that’s the sort of control you need, this filter keeps the change simple and predictable.
Specialist Note
“Will this Firecrest Ultra ND 0.3 make a noticeable difference?” Yes, but it’s a gentle one: the one-stop reduction lets you double your shutter time, say from 1/125 to 1/60 second, which can add a touch of movement to flowing water. The 100x100mm square format gives you room to position the filter in a suitable holder, though you’ll want to make sure your setup accepts that size. I’d point this out to landscape photographers who want a small exposure adjustment without committing to a much darker filter. One stop won’t create a dramatic long exposure in bright daylight by itself; that’s the honest limit.
