Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stops) | Long exposures in bright light
Turn moving water into a smooth sweep or let clouds travel across the frame, even when daylight would normally demand a fast shutter speed. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stops) is a very strong neutral density filter, cutting the exposure by 20 stops. That makes it a specialist tool for landscape photographers who want long exposures in bright conditions, rather than waiting for dusk or choosing a much darker scene. Its 100x100mm square format is relevant if your filter workflow is built around that size. With this much light reduction, exposure planning becomes part of the job: a shutter speed that looks modest before fitting the filter can turn into many minutes. That’s useful for deliberate motion blur, but it isn’t a general-purpose filter for everyday shooting. Choose it when you want time itself to shape the photograph.
Specialist Note
This filter lets you make a long daylight exposure without waiting for the light to fade. Its 20-stop reduction means a metered 1/1000-second exposure becomes roughly 17 minutes and 29 seconds, so it can turn moving water into a continuous-looking surface or draw cloud movement across a landscape. I’d meter the scene before fitting it, then calculate the filtered exposure and use a steady support for that long shutter time. The 100x100mm size is the practical detail to build your filter setup around; it’s a square-format filter, not a round screw-in type. It suits patient landscape photographers, but those very long exposures also mean any movement in the camera can soften the whole frame.
