Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 0.6 (2 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 0.6 (2 Stops) | Make small exposure adjustments in bright light
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 0.6 (2 Stops) reduces the light reaching your camera by two stops, giving landscape and outdoor photographers more control in bright conditions. It suits photographers who want a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture while keeping the exposure balanced. That modest reduction can help water or cloud movement register with a little more softness, or give you room to open the aperture when the available light is strong. The 105mm size is a practical consideration for your filter setup: it’s most useful when your existing filters and holder are built around the same size. This is a measured adjustment, not a heavy darkening effect, so it’s best for fine exposure control rather than very long daytime exposures.
What two stops can do
A two-stop reduction gives you room to change exposure settings without letting in as much light. For example, if your unfiltered shutter speed is 1/250 second, two stops slower is about 1/60 second at the same aperture and ISO. That can show some movement in a stream or leaves while retaining more detail than an extremely slow exposure. The result still depends on the light and the movement in your scene, so treat that calculation as a starting point.
Specialist Note
Morning light glints off a stream while the banks stay bright; that’s where this filter earns its place. I’d use the two-stop reduction to move a 1/250-second exposure to roughly 1/60 second, keeping the same aperture and ISO, for a gentler trace of water movement. The 105mm size makes it important to build your filter setup around that format rather than assume it will match other filters you own. It suits landscape photographers who want a controlled, subtle change. One honest limit: two stops won’t create a dramatic long exposure in strong daylight, so choose it for moderation, not a silky, time-smoothed scene.
