Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop) | Create long exposures in bright light
Turn a bright scene into a chance to show movement: this Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra neutral density filter cuts the light reaching your camera by 16 stops. That lets you use a much longer shutter speed than the conditions would normally allow, which is useful for softening moving water or showing cloud movement in a landscape. It’s aimed at photographers who deliberately work with long exposures and want to do so even in daylight, rather than waiting for dim light. The 105mm size identifies this filter format, while the 4.8 density gives a very strong reduction in light. Because that reduction is substantial, it’s worth planning your composition and exposure before you start. Choose it when your aim is a pronounced long-exposure effect; for ordinary exposure adjustment, this strength may be more than you need.
Specialist Note
16 stops means you can stretch an exposure dramatically, even when the scene is bright. I’d suggest this to landscape photographers who want water to read as a smooth surface, or clouds to leave a sense of movement: set your composition and focus first, then use the filter to make the long shutter speed possible. The 105mm format is the other key detail; it matters when you’re selecting the filter setup this needs to work with, so match that size rather than assuming it fits every system. One honest point: with this much light reduction, composing and focusing through the filter can be difficult. Plan those steps before using it.
