Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop) | Deep light reduction for long exposures
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop) cuts incoming light by 18 stops, giving photographers room to use much longer exposures in bright conditions. It’s built for landscape photographers and other careful image-makers who want to record movement over time rather than freeze it. Think water softened into a continuous flow, or clouds shifting across a frame during a long exposure. The ND 5.4 rating describes a very strong reduction, so this is a specialist filter for situations where ordinary exposure settings won’t give you the shutter time you want. For a sense of the change, an exposure of 1/125 second becomes roughly 35 minutes after an 18-stop reduction, before any adjustment for the scene. That makes planning and exposure checks part of the process. Choose it for deliberate, extended exposures, not as an everyday filter for general shooting.
Specialist Note
Once this filter is in your setup, the shutter can stay open far longer in daylight without forcing you to stop down endlessly. That 18-stop reduction is dramatic: as a rough guide, 1/125 second becomes about 35 minutes, so plan for a genuinely long exposure and check the result as you work. The 105mm size is the practical detail to sort out first; your filter system needs to accept that measurement. I’d suggest it to photographers intentionally smoothing moving water or recording cloud movement, rather than anyone wanting a quick exposure tweak. It’s a focused tool, and its strength is also its limit: the very deep reduction takes more care to meter and manage.
