Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 7.2 (24 Stop) | Make very long exposures in bright light
Turn moving water into a soft blur or clouds into long streaks, even when the light would normally force you to use a fast shutter speed. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra is a neutral density filter rated at 7.2, or 24 stops: it cuts the light reaching your camera by an enormous amount, giving you room to make exposures that would otherwise be far too long in daylight. It suits photographers who want deliberate motion blur or a still, simplified look in a busy scene, and who are comfortable calculating long exposure times. This is an extreme-strength filter, not a subtle exposure adjustment. Plan your framing and exposure before you fit it, then use a timer for exposures that run beyond your camera’s usual shutter settings. The 105mm format is part of the product name; make sure it matches the filter setup you intend to use.
Where it earns its place
- Use the 24-stop reduction to lengthen shutter times for flowing water or moving clouds.
- It can also help blur movement through a scene, simplifying what appears in a long exposure.
- Because the reduction is so strong, compose and focus before fitting the filter, then calculate the filtered exposure.
Plan the exposure
Twenty-four stops means multiplying the exposure time by 224. As a calculation example, a reading of 1/8000s becomes roughly 35 minutes at the same aperture and ISO. That’s why a timer and a written exposure calculation are useful companions for this filter.
Specialist Note
First-time owners often expect a 24-stop filter to be a modest tweak; it changes exposure dramatically. I’d compose and focus first, then fit the Firecrest Ultra and work out the new shutter time. Its 7.2 density gives you the scope for very long exposures, which is useful when you want water to blur into a continuous surface or clouds to travel across the frame. The 105mm format is the fit detail to pay attention to: match it to the filter setup you plan to use. My honest advice is to plan carefully—at this strength, even a fast starting shutter speed can turn into a long wait.
