Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 127mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 127mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops) | Create long exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can make a slow shutter speed impractical: the exposure gets too bright before you can blur moving water or clouds. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Neutral Density 2.4 reduces the light reaching your camera by eight stops, giving you room to use a much longer exposure. It’s suited to landscape photographers and anyone who wants to control exposure in strong light, especially when motion blur is part of the picture. For example, an exposure that would otherwise be 1/250 sec can become about one second with eight stops of reduction. That makes this filter particularly useful for smoothing water or showing movement in a bright scene. Its 127mm size makes it a large-format filter, so plan your setup around a holder that accepts this filter size. This is a substantial light reduction, rather than a subtle adjustment.
Specialist Note
“Will this 8-stop filter make a visible difference in daylight?” Yes—it gives you a much longer exposure to work with. The ND 2.4 rating corresponds to eight stops, so a 1/250 sec exposure can land around one second; that’s a practical starting point for softening moving water without waiting for dusk. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want that effect in bright conditions. The 127mm size is the other detail to plan around: choose a holder made for this filter size. Eight stops is a strong reduction, so it’s less suited to small, quick exposure adjustments.
