Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops) | Make longer exposures in bright light
Water can take on a softer look, and moving clouds can blur across the frame, when you can use a longer shutter speed in daylight. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 2.4 filter cuts the light reaching your camera by eight stops, giving you room to extend exposure time without changing the scene. It suits landscape photographers and anyone who wants to show movement in water or clouds while keeping a chosen aperture. An eight-stop reduction is substantial: for example, a meter reading of 1/125 second becomes about two seconds with the filter in place, before any other exposure changes. That makes it particularly useful when ordinary daylight would otherwise force a much faster shutter speed. The 37mm size is a key fit detail, so match it to a lens with a 37mm filter thread. This is a neutral-density filter, rather than a UV filter.
Specialist Note
First-time ND filter users often expect an eight-stop filter to be a small exposure tweak; it’s a big shift, and that’s exactly what makes this one useful for deliberate motion blur. Its 2.4 density gives an eight-stop reduction, so start from your metered shutter speed and lengthen it by eight stops—for instance, 1/125 second becomes roughly two seconds. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers smoothing the texture of moving water, or softening cloud movement, while keeping their chosen framing and aperture. The 37mm size matters at the lens: use it where the filter thread is 37mm. Because the reduction is strong, you’ll need to recalculate exposure rather than rely on the original meter reading.
