Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop) | Make long exposures in bright light
The 37mm filter size keeps this neutral-density option suited to lenses with a matching filter diameter. Its defining feature is the strong 3.9 density: a 13-stop reduction in light that gives you room to use much longer shutter speeds in bright conditions. That’s useful when you want moving water to blur, clouds to drift across a landscape, or a longer exposure without changing the scene’s brightness by closing the aperture. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra is for photographers who want that pronounced effect and are happy to work deliberately with exposure. It’s especially relevant for landscapes and static architectural scenes, where a long exposure can soften motion while fixed details remain sharp. The strength is substantial, so this isn’t a subtle light-cutting filter. If you’re aiming for a small exposure adjustment, a 13-stop reduction is more than you need.
Specialist Note
With 13 stops taken out, shutter speeds can move from a fraction of a second into long-exposure territory without changing your chosen aperture. For example, a metered 1/125 sec exposure becomes roughly 65 seconds at the same aperture and ISO, so use a tripod and a remote release if you want the fixed parts of a landscape to stay crisp. The 37mm size is the practical detail to match to your lens: it’s made for a lens that takes a 37mm filter. I’d point landscape photographers to this when they want water or cloud movement rendered softly in daylight. One thing to keep in mind: 3.9 is a very strong reduction, so it’s less suited to modest exposure tweaks.
