Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop) | Make daylight exposures dramatically longer
Turn moving water into a soft sweep or clouds into broad streaks, even in daylight. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 37mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop) cuts the light reaching your camera by 22 stops, giving you room to use much longer shutter times than the scene would normally allow. It suits photographers who want a pronounced long-exposure effect and are happy to plan exposure carefully; this is an especially strong option when a modest ND filter won’t slow the shutter enough. Meter the scene first, then recalculate with the filter’s 22-stop reduction before making the exposure. The result depends on the available light and your chosen settings, so expect to experiment with timing. Its 37mm size is intended for a lens with a matching filter thread. This is a very dense filter, so it’s best approached as a deliberate creative tool rather than an everyday exposure adjustment.
Specialist Note
For smoothing a waterfall in bright conditions, this filter can extend the exposure far beyond what ordinary shutter adjustments allow. I’d meter the scene without the filter, then use a 22-stop exposure calculation to set the filtered exposure; that large reduction is what makes the flowing water read as a continuous blur. It also suits moving clouds when you want their motion to show across the frame. The 37mm diameter matters when choosing where to use it: the lens needs a matching filter thread. Its 6.6 density is very strong, so it’s most useful when you’re specifically after an extreme long exposure, not a small change in brightness.
