Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 46mm Neutral Density 1.5 (5 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 46mm Neutral Density 1.5 (5 Stops) | Longer exposures in bright light
To turn moving water into a softer, more flowing shape, you need a longer exposure than bright conditions usually allow. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 46mm Neutral Density 1.5 (5 Stops) reduces the light reaching the camera by five stops, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture. It suits photographers who want more control over exposure in daylight, particularly when movement in a scene is part of the picture: water can blur, while a busy view can take on a calmer feel with a long exposure. You can also use the light reduction to work with a wider aperture when the available light would otherwise call for a smaller one. The effect depends on your chosen exposure and what’s moving in the frame; the filter gives you control over light, not motion itself.
Specialist Note
A five-stop reduction makes a slow-shutter effect possible in daylight without waiting for the light to fade. I’d suggest it to someone who wants to smooth a stream or waterfall: if your meter calls for 1/30 sec, adding five stops of reduction brings that to about one second, which gives moving water time to blur. The 46mm size means it’s intended for a lens with a matching 46mm filter thread, so check that against the lens you plan to use. Its ND 1.5 strength is a fixed amount of light reduction; it’s a focused tool for this exposure range, rather than an adjustable variable-density filter.
