Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 46mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 46mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops) | Long exposures in bright daylight
To turn a bright daytime scene into a long exposure with softened water or streaking clouds, you need to cut a substantial amount of light before it reaches the camera. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 46mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops) is made for that job: its ND 2.4 strength lets you use a slower shutter speed when the scene would otherwise be too bright. It suits landscape photographers and anyone working with moving water, clouds or passing crowds who wants motion to register as blur rather than a frozen instant. It can also help you keep a wider aperture outdoors when you want less depth of field without pushing the shutter speed higher. This is a strong-density filter, so it’s most useful when you deliberately want a pronounced exposure change. For quick, ordinary snapshots, eight stops may be more than you need.
Specialist Note
Harsh daylight can leave you choosing between a fast exposure and the motion blur you actually want; this filter gives you room to choose the latter. At eight stops, it cuts exposure enough that a 1/250s starting shutter speed becomes about 1 second at the same aperture and ISO. Try that for flowing water or moving cloud, then adjust to taste. The 46mm size is the detail to match against the filter size specified for your lens, so it suits setups that take that diameter rather than being a universal fit. I’d keep in mind that this much light reduction can be excessive once the light fades; it’s at its most useful in bright scenes with movement to blur.
