Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops) | Make long exposures in bright light
On a bright day, the shutter speed you need for a long exposure may be out of reach: water freezes in place, and clouds barely blur. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra is a 55mm neutral density filter that reduces the light entering the camera, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed in brighter conditions. Its ND 2.4 rating corresponds to an eight-stop reduction. That makes it particularly suited to deliberate motion blur in landscapes and other scenes where you want movement to register over time. It can also help you use a wider aperture when the available light would otherwise call for a smaller one. The key practical point is that this is a substantial reduction, rather than a subtle adjustment. If you enjoy shaping motion with exposure, it gives you a clear way to do that without waiting for dimmer light.
Specialist Note
Trying to blur moving water in daylight can leave you stuck with shutter speeds that are far too quick; this filter gives you the exposure room to slow things down. With eight stops of reduction, a starting exposure of 1/250 sec becomes roughly one second, which can give a stream or waterfall a smoother look. For a 55mm filter thread, the size is straightforward to match to a lens with that thread. I’d suggest using a stable support for those longer exposures, especially around the one-second mark. This suits landscape photographers who want motion blur in bright conditions. It’s a strong reduction, so it won’t be the right pick when you only want a small exposure change.
