Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop) | Make daylight exposures dramatically longer
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 5.4 (18 Stop) reduces the light reaching your camera by 18 stops, giving you room to use much longer shutter speeds in bright conditions. It’s built for photographers who want to smooth moving water, soften passing clouds or show movement in a busy scene while keeping a chosen aperture and ISO. This is an especially strong density for deliberate, very long exposures in daylight, rather than a filter for small exposure adjustments. You’ll need to plan the exposure around that substantial reduction: meter the scene without the filter, then account for the 18-stop change. For a waterfall, that can turn a fast shutter speed into a long exposure that blurs the flow into a continuous-looking surface. The 58mm size is for lenses with a matching filter thread.
Specialist Note
Photographers shaping the movement of rivers, coastlines or clouds will get the most from this filter’s strong reduction. The 58mm diameter makes the lens thread the practical point to check: it needs to be 58mm, not just a lens that looks a similar size. With ND 5.4, you’re working with 18 stops, so compose and focus before fitting the filter; there’s very little light left for viewing through it. As an exposure example, if your unfiltered reading is 1/250 sec, adding 18 stops brings you to about 17 minutes 30 seconds. That’s a useful route to silky water in daylight, though such a long exposure calls for steady support and careful timing.
