Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 67mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 67mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop) | Extend exposures by 22 stops
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 67mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop) reduces incoming light by 22 stops, giving you a way to make exposures dramatically longer in bright conditions. It’s built for photographers who want pronounced motion blur from moving water or clouds, or who need to use a slow shutter speed when the available light would otherwise call for a much faster one. This is an especially strong density, so it’s best suited to planned, deliberate work rather than quick changes between shots. The 67mm designation identifies the filter size, while ND 6.6 describes its density. At 22 stops, the exposure change is substantial: a shutter speed that would normally be a fraction of a second can become a very long exposure. Work out the exposure before shooting and be ready to manage the extended time. For everyday exposure adjustment, this level of density may be more than you need.
Specialist Note
At 22 stops, exposure planning becomes the main job: this filter can turn a normal shutter speed into hours, so decide on your framing and focus before calculating the final exposure. The 22-stop reduction is useful when you want water or clouds to blur heavily in bright conditions, but it’s far beyond a modest shutter-speed adjustment. For example, a metered 1/125 sec exposure becomes roughly 9 hours and 19 minutes with the filter in place. The 67mm size is the measurement to match to your lens’s filter thread; it doesn’t tell you which lenses it fits. I’d recommend it to photographers specifically pursuing extreme long exposures, and I’d plan a test calculation before committing to a scene. For shorter exposures, this much density can be limiting.
