Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops) | Create longer exposures in bright light
Without a neutral density filter, bright conditions can leave you choosing between a fast shutter speed and a narrower aperture. This filter reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you more room to use a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture while keeping your exposure under control. It’s especially useful for long-exposure landscapes, where moving water can take on a softer look, or for showing movement in clouds. It can also help when you want a wider aperture in strong daylight, though the effect depends on the scene and your exposure settings. The Firecrest Ultra is an 8-stop ND filter in a 77mm size, so it’s intended for a lens with a matching filter thread. Its fixed strength suits photographers who want a substantial reduction in light for deliberate exposure choices, rather than a small adjustment.
Specialist Note
For moving water in daylight, I’d start with an unfiltered reading of 1/125 sec, then fit this 8-stop filter: that brings the exposure to about 2 seconds at the same aperture and ISO. It’s a practical starting point for giving a stream or small cascade a smoother appearance. The 77mm size means it’s for a lens with a 77mm filter thread, so do check that size against the lens you plan to use. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want long exposures without changing their chosen aperture. One honest caveat: eight stops is a strong, fixed reduction, so it can be more than you need as light fades.
