Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops) | Tame bright light for longer exposures
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops) is an 82mm neutral density filter that cuts the light reaching your lens by six stops. It suits photographers who want more control over shutter speed or aperture when the scene is bright, especially for landscapes, water and architecture. With less light entering the camera, you can use a slower shutter speed to show movement in water or clouds, or keep a wider aperture without overexposing the image. The six-stop reduction is substantial: it gives you room to make deliberate exposure choices in daylight, rather than relying on a fast shutter speed simply to hold back brightness. This is a focused tool for managing exposure, not a UV filter or a general-purpose lens protector. Choose it when you want to shape how light is recorded, and have a lens with an 82mm filter thread.
Specialist Note
On a bright afternoon, the water in a canal can look almost still at a fast shutter speed; this filter gives you the option to show its movement instead. Its six-stop reduction turns 1/250 sec into roughly 1/4 sec at the same aperture and ISO, a handy starting point for a softened-water effect. I’d suggest it to landscape and architectural photographers who want to work with longer exposures in daylight. The 82mm size means it’s for a lens with that filter thread, so it’s worth matching the filter size to the lens you plan to use. Six stops is a strong reduction, but changing light can still call for a fresh exposure check.
