Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops) | Create longer exposures in bright light
Its defining feature is an eight-stop reduction in light, giving you room to use much slower shutter speeds when the scene is bright. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 2.4 suits landscape photographers who want to smooth moving water, soften cloud movement or make people and traffic less prominent in a long exposure. It can also help when you want a slower shutter speed in daylight for a particular creative effect. The 82mm size is the key detail to match to your lens’s filter thread. A neutral density filter reduces the light reaching the camera, so you can keep your chosen aperture while lengthening the exposure. That makes this a purpose-specific tool rather than an everyday protective filter. If you’re planning a long exposure, compose and focus before fitting the filter, then adjust the shutter speed to compensate for the light reduction.
Specialist Note
Eight stops turns a 1/30-second exposure into roughly eight seconds, which is enough to give flowing water a much softer appearance. I’d consider this filter for daylight scenes where you want that slower shutter without changing your chosen aperture. Its ND 2.4 rating describes the same substantial light reduction, so take care to set up your composition and focus before fitting it; the view will be much darker through the lens. The 82mm size makes the lens thread an important match to check. This is a focused tool for deliberate long exposures, not a general-purpose filter for every situation.
