Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop) | Create long exposures in bright daylight
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 3.9 (13 Stop) cuts the light reaching your camera by 13 stops, giving you room to use a much longer shutter speed in bright conditions. It’s aimed at landscape photographers and anyone who wants to show movement rather than freeze it: think flowing water, passing clouds or traffic softened by a long exposure. The 82mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread, so it suits a kit built around that diameter. With this much light reduction, you can use a slower shutter speed without having to close the aperture right down just to control exposure. That’s useful when daylight would otherwise leave you with a fast shutter. Plan your exposure before fitting the filter, then adjust the shutter speed to suit the scene and the effect you want.
Specialist Note
At midday, the canal is bright, but you want the water to read as a smooth sweep rather than a collection of ripples. This is where the 13-stop reduction earns its place. For example, a metered 1/125 sec exposure becomes roughly 65 seconds at the same aperture and ISO, so moving water blurs across the frame. I’d recommend it to photographers who enjoy building a long exposure deliberately, rather than making quick adjustments on the fly. The 82mm size makes the filter a match for a lens with that filter thread. One practical point: with exposures running to many seconds, a steady camera and a considered composition matter.
