Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 4.8 (16 Stop) | Create long exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can leave you with shutter speeds that are too fast for the motion you want to show. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 95mm Neutral Density 4.8 filter cuts the light reaching your camera by 16 stops, giving you room to use much longer exposures. That makes it useful for smoothing moving water, recording cloud movement or deliberately blurring activity in a scene, even when the light is strong. It’s for photographers who want to control motion with shutter speed rather than wait for dimmer conditions. The 95mm size is a key practical detail: your lens needs to accept a 95mm filter. This is a very strong neutral density filter, so exposure times can become lengthy; plan your composition and focus before fitting it, then calculate the exposure with the filter in place.
Specialist Note
Does a 16-stop filter make a real difference to exposure? Yes: it gives you far more time to let motion build in the frame. For example, a metered 1/125-second exposure becomes roughly 8 minutes 44 seconds with this filter, which can turn moving water into a soft, continuous surface. I’d consider it for daylight scenes where a short exposure won’t give you that effect. The 95mm diameter also matters in practice: it needs to match the filter thread on your lens. One honest point: at this strength, getting the exposure right takes care, so work out your framing and focus before adding the filter.
