Without a graduated filter, a bright band in the middle of a scene can be awkward to balance: expose for it and darker areas may lose detail, or expose for the darker areas and the centre may become too bright. The H&Y K-Series Center GND is a graduated neutral-density filter with its darker effect intended for the centre of the composition. Its ND0.9 strength lets you reduce light in that area while keeping the rest of the frame less affected. It suits photographers who regularly compose with a bright central area, such as a horizon or a strip of strong light through a landscape. The magnetic frame is part of the filter’s design, so it can be brought into the workflow when a particular composition calls for it. Its specific strength is controlling central brightness; it isn’t a full-frame ND filter.
Specialist Note
At a waterfront with the horizon running through the centre of the frame, I’d position the ND0.9 graduation over the brightest central band and check the balance in the viewfinder. The centre GND format is useful when the bright area sits there rather than across the whole scene. Its ND0.9 density gives you a defined amount of light reduction in that graduated area, while the magnetic frame makes fitting or removing the filter part of the shooting workflow. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who often frame a bright horizon centrally. One limitation: if the brightest area is off to one side, this centre-focused filter may not line up with it.
