Hawke RS Vantage 4-12x40 AO 1 Mil Dot

Hawke RS Vantage 4-12x40 AO 1 Mil Dot | A variable-power scope with a Mil Dot reticle

It’s frustrating when one fixed magnification doesn’t suit every view. The Hawke RS Vantage 4-12x40 AO 1 Mil Dot gives you a variable range from 4x to 12x, so you can choose a lower setting for a broader view or increase magnification when you want to see more detail. Its 1 Mil Dot reticle adds marked reference points to the sight picture. The model name also specifies a 40mm objective and AO. That’s the information to focus on when comparing it with another scope or deciding if its range suits the way you’ll use it. It’s a straightforward set of numbers, without a long list of extra claims to weigh up. If you want a scope with a fixed magnification, this variable-power model may offer more range than you need.

Choosing a magnification

A variable 4-12x range lets you adjust magnification to the view in front of you rather than stick with one setting. At 4x, you’re at the lower end of this scope’s range; at 12x, you’re at the upper end. The useful setting depends on what you’re looking at and how much of the view you want to keep in sight. There’s no single setting that will suit every situation, so expect to make the choice as you use the scope.

The 1 Mil Dot marking identifies the reticle style. Its dots provide reference points within the sight picture; they’re part of the reticle, not a separate accessory. AO is another designation in the product name. If you’re comparing scopes, keep those markings alongside the magnification range and 40mm objective designation, rather than judging by magnification alone.
