Kase Revolution Plus Soft GND 0.9 112mm
Kase Revolution Plus Soft GND 0.9 112mm | Balance bright skies with darker foregrounds
At sunset, a bright sky can push the land below it into shadow. The Kase Revolution Plus Soft GND 0.9 is a graduated neutral-density filter for scenes where that difference in brightness needs managing. Its soft transition is suited to horizons that aren’t perfectly straight, such as hills or buildings breaking the skyline. The 0.9 rating corresponds to three stops of light reduction at the denser part of the filter, helping bring a bright sky closer to the exposure of the foreground. The 112mm designation identifies its filter size; the title doesn’t specify a holder or camera fit, so those shouldn’t be assumed. This filter is most useful when you want to retain detail across a high-contrast landscape in one exposure, rather than letting the sky dictate the exposure for the whole frame. It’s a considered option for landscape photographers who often work with bright skies and uneven horizons.
Using the filter
Keep the transition near the horizon, then adjust its position to suit the shape of the scene. With a soft graduation, the change from darker to lighter is spread across an area rather than forming a hard line. That can look more natural where trees, rooftops or ridgelines cross the sky. The graduated effect is most useful when the bright area sits mainly in one part of the frame; it won’t independently correct a scene where bright highlights are scattered throughout. Think of it as a way to balance the sky and land, not as a replacement for choosing your composition and exposure carefully.
Specialist Note
Bright skies forcing you to choose between sky detail and a dark foreground is the problem this filter is meant to ease. The 0.9 strength gives you about three stops of reduction at its denser edge, so it can make a pronounced difference when the sky is much brighter than the land. Its soft GND transition is the detail I’d focus on for broken horizons: place that gradual change across a ridge or a line of buildings, rather than expecting a sharp boundary. It suits landscape photographers working with those mixed-brightness scenes. The 112mm size is a specific filter format, so make sure your filter setup supports it before planning around it.
