LaCie 2Big 12Tb Thunderbolt 2 Usb3.0 STEY12000400

LaCie 2Big 12Tb Thunderbolt 2 Usb3.0 STEY12000400 | 12TB external storage, two connection options

What sets this LaCie apart is the combination of 12TB of storage with Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.0 connections. It’s an external hard drive for people who need room for a sizeable collection of files and want a choice of connection standards. That makes it worth considering for a desk setup where storage needs have grown beyond a small portable drive. The title gives the capacity and connection types, without making claims about transfer speeds or how the drive is configured internally. Its strength is straightforward: a large amount of external storage in one product. If you’re choosing a drive for a specific computer or workspace, the useful first step is to match the connection you plan to use with the ports in that setup.

Planning your storage

For a working archive, a little organisation can make a large drive easier to live with. Group files into folders by project or year, and choose names you’ll still understand months later. It’s also sensible to keep another copy of important files somewhere separate; an external drive can be one part of a backup routine, but a single copy leaves you dependent on one storage device. Think about what you’ll keep on the drive and how you’ll find it again, rather than filling it without a plan. That’s a practical consideration with any high-capacity external HDD, and it can save time when you need to retrieve a particular file.
