Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II Canon-EF-Mount
Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II Canon-EF-Mount | Portraits with clear subject separation
For portraits that draw attention to the person rather than the background, the Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II is a 58mm standard prime lens for Canon EF cameras. Its portrait-friendly focal length gives you room to frame a head-and-shoulders shot without moving right up to your subject. The lens suits photographers who want to shape focus themselves and take a considered approach to making portraits, rather than relying on autofocus. Use it for a single subject at home, in a studio or in a quiet outdoor setting; the fast maximum aperture gives you room to separate your subject from a busy background. It’s a specialist manual-focus lens, so it rewards a steady, deliberate technique. If precise focus and a distinctive portrait perspective matter more to you than quick point-and-shoot handling, this Biotar has a clear role.
Specialist Note
Busy backgrounds can make a portrait feel less personal; this Biotar gives you a way to put the emphasis back on your subject. At f/1.5, you can keep the setting soft while making the person the clear point of attention. For a head-and-shoulders portrait, focus carefully on the near eye; manual focus lets you place that point yourself, but it calls for patience at the widest aperture. On a Canon APS-C (EF-S) body, the 58mm framing is about 93mm equivalent, which suits tighter portraits. I’d favour it for deliberate portrait work, not fast-moving moments where you need autofocus.
