PolarPro Arctic CP - 77mm Threaded - Benjamin Hardman: Keep colour and contrast in dim light
PolarPro Arctic CP - 77mm Threaded - Benjamin Hardman transmits 45% of incoming light, around half a stop more than a traditional polarising filter. Made with photographer Benjamin Hardman, it’s aimed at photographers working in demanding, low-light environments such as the Arctic. Its higher light transmission is a useful distinction when you’re photographing glaciers and icebergs in dim conditions, or trying to retain detail around Arctic wildlife. PolarPro’s Chroma Polarization Technology is intended to preserve natural colour without a colour shift, while the filter’s polarising effect brings added contrast and clarity to scenes. The 77mm threaded version suits a lens with a matching filter thread, and its slim frame is compatible with most lens hoods. Hardman field-tested the Arctic CP on a sailing journey through Greenland’s ice fields; this version brings that cold-weather-focused design to a standard threaded filter setup.
Arctic field details
- Chroma Polarization Technology: The design is intended to maintain accurate colour without introducing a colour shift. That matters when ice, snow and pale skies need to retain their natural tones.
- 110° rotation: A short turn covers the full polarisation range, with PolarPro describing it as five times faster than traditional designs. You can adjust the effect with less rotation of the filter.
- Glove-friendly grip: The enlarged gripping surface is made for adjustments in cold conditions. It gives gloved fingers more purchase on the filter ring.
- Slim frame: The low-profile design works with most lens hoods. That’s useful when you’d rather keep your hood mounted while working outdoors.
- 77mm threaded mount: This version screws onto a lens with a 77mm filter thread. It’s the standard threaded option in the Arctic CP range.
Specialist Note
At first light, a glacier sits in muted blue shadow, and this filter earns its place by gathering more light than a conventional polariser. I’d point it toward landscape photographers working with ice, or wildlife shooters dealing with the subdued light of an Arctic day. The 45% transmission is the key detail here: it’s around half a stop brighter than traditional polarising filters, though it still reduces the light reaching your camera. The 110° adjustment range is also a thoughtful touch; turn the ring to set the polarising effect across its full range without a long rotation. For a 77mm lens thread, it’s a considered option for cold-weather work.
