PolarPro Chroma VND/PL 6-9 - Helix Maglock (Filter Only) - McKinnon Series

PolarPro Chroma VND/PL 6-9 - Helix Maglock (Filter Only) - McKinnon Series | Control bright light and reflections

Bright daylight can make it hard to keep the aperture and shutter settings you want, especially when filming outdoors. The PolarPro Chroma VND/PL 6-9 is a variable neutral-density and polarizing filter for that kind of situation: its 6-9 range gives you a way to cut incoming light while also working with reflections and glare. It’s part of the McKinnon Series and uses the Helix Maglock system. This version is listed as the filter only, so it’s for photographers and filmmakers who already have a Helix Maglock setup in mind, rather than someone shopping for a complete filter system. It’s most at home when strong light calls for exposure control and the scene also has reflective surfaces, such as water or glass. The two filter functions make it especially relevant for outdoor video and landscape work, where both exposure and reflections can affect the finished image.

Using the VND/PL together

A variable ND filter helps reduce the light reaching the camera; the polarizing function can help manage reflections from non-metallic surfaces. In practice, those jobs often come up at the same time: a bright scene may need less light for your chosen exposure, while glare on water or a window can distract from the subject. This combination brings both considerations into one filter. The result still depends on the scene and how the filter is used, so take a moment to judge exposure and reflections in your camera’s view before recording or taking the shot.
