Rycote Softie Kit CS-M1
Rycote Softie Kit CS-M1 | Wind protection for microphone recording
Unlike a bare microphone, the Rycote Softie Kit CS-M1 is intended to help manage wind noise at the microphone itself. It suits sound recordists who work outdoors and want a practical way to make speech or location sound less vulnerable to a breeze. Its strongest use is straightforward: reducing wind disturbance during recordings where moving the microphone away from the source isn’t an option. That makes it relevant for outdoor interviews, spoken-word recording and gathering ambient sound on location. A windscreen won’t remove every unwanted sound, and it can’t replace sensible microphone placement, but addressing wind before it reaches the recording is a worthwhile step. The product name identifies it as a Softie kit in the CS-M1 version, rather than a general-purpose microphone accessory. If you’re choosing equipment for a specific microphone setup, that exact designation is the detail to use when matching the product.
Specialist Note
New users sometimes expect to fix wind noise in editing, when it’s often better to reduce it before it reaches the recording. That’s the job of a Softie: use it when a little outdoor breeze could distract from an interview or wash over location ambience. The “Kit” part tells you this is sold as a kit, while CS-M1 is the version name to match against your intended setup; don’t treat the name as a universal fit claim. I’d consider it for spoken recording outdoors, then position the microphone carefully and keep it out of direct gusts where possible. It’s a focused wind-protection accessory, not a way to eliminate every environmental sound.
