SmallHD Cine 18
SmallHD Cine 18 | A field monitor for on-set viewing
When the camera is framed in a position that’s awkward for others to view, a field monitor gives the crew another place to see the picture. The SmallHD Cine 18 is a field monitor for that kind of on-set use, where a camera operator, director or client may need to view the image without crowding the camera. It suits video crews who want a dedicated monitor as part of their working setup, whether they’re composing a shot or sharing the view with someone else on set. The useful point here is its clear role: this is a monitor, not a camera or a recording device. The product name and category don’t tell us about its display, controls or connections, so I wouldn’t choose it on the assumption of a particular feature. If you’re comparing monitors, start with the setup you need it to serve.
Specialist Note
The nuisance this solves is having the camera’s view available only at the camera itself. As a field monitor, the Cine 18 gives your crew a separate place to view the shot; that’s handy when a director needs to follow framing without standing over the operator. I’d use it as a shared reference during composition, then keep the camera operator responsible for the camera’s settings. SmallHD is the maker, and Cine 18 is the model name, so those are the details I’d use when discussing it with your crew or adding it to a kit list. It suits productions that need an on-set viewing point. A monitor helps you see the image; it doesn’t replace the camera.
