Tiffen 44BPM4 4x4 Black Pro-Mist 4 Filter
Tiffen 44BPM4 4x4 Black Pro-Mist 4 Filter | Pronounced highlight bloom and softer contrast
Highlights can take on a visible glow, while the overall image feels less crisp and contrasty. The Tiffen 44BPM4 4x4 Black Pro-Mist 4 Filter is made for creating that expressive look in a controlled, deliberate way. It suits filmmakers and photographers who want the filter itself to shape the image, rather than relying on digital softening afterwards. Think glowing practical lights in a night scene, or a portrait where you want a gentler rendering of bright skin highlights. The “4” in the name identifies a strong grade, so this isn’t a barely-there effect: it makes a clear creative statement. Its 4x4 format is intended for square filter setups, so it’s worth planning how it will be held in front of your lens before building it into a shooting kit. If subtle correction is the goal, this is likely more effect than you need.
Working with the look
Keep the lighting purposeful: bright points and highlights give the diffusion something visible to work on. For a restrained result, use a lighter touch with the scene’s highlights; for a more pronounced glow, let bright practicals remain in frame. The filter’s character is part of the image, so it’s best chosen for scenes where that softness is wanted.
Specialist Note
The Tiffen 44BPM4 4x4 Black Pro-Mist 4 Filter is for giving highlights a bold, diffused presence. I’d point it towards filmmakers and image-makers who want that effect to be obvious, not just a faint change in rendering. The grade 4 designation means I’d use it with intention: a night scene with bright practical lights is a natural use, especially when you keep those lights visible in the frame. The 4x4 format also matters in your setup; it’s a square filter, so plan for a holder that takes this format. My honest advice: if you’re after a barely noticeable softening, this grade may feel too strong.
