Tiffen 44PM116 4x4 Pro-Mist 1/16 Filter
Tiffen 44PM116 4x4 Pro-Mist 1/16 Filter | Gentle highlight bloom
What sets this filter apart is its restrained Pro-Mist effect: bright highlights gain a soft glow, while the image keeps much of its definition. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want a gentler, more atmospheric rendering without making every detail look heavily softened. The 1/16 strength is at the subtle end of the Pro-Mist range, so it’s useful when you want the effect to support a scene rather than dominate it. Try it for portraits with bright points of light in the background, or for video scenes with practical lamps in frame. The 4x4 format makes it a square filter for use in a suitable filter setup. This is a creative filter, not a UV filter: its appeal is the way it shapes highlights and contrast, rather than a protective or colour-correction role.
The look in practice
Pro-Mist is most noticeable when the scene gives it something bright to work with. A window, lamp or reflected highlight can develop a gentle halo, while the overall image takes on a slightly softer feel. In a flat-lit scene with few bright points, the effect may be much less apparent. That makes this strength a considered option for keeping the atmosphere subtle, rather than aiming for an unmistakably dreamy image.
Specialist Note
First-time owners sometimes expect a diffusion filter to make the whole picture look blurred; the 1/16 strength is a gentler way into the Pro-Mist look. I’d suggest it for a portrait with a bright window or practical lights behind the subject: keep those highlights in the composition and let them form a soft glow without asking the filter to do all the work. For a night-time video scene, the same approach can give visible lamps a more atmospheric edge. The 4x4 format is worth factoring into your setup, so make sure your filter arrangement is designed for that square size. Its subtle effect can be easy to miss in a scene without bright highlights.
