Tiffen 44STR44 4x4 Star 4PT 4mm Filter
Tiffen 44STR44 4x4 Star 4PT 4mm Filter | Give bright points four rays
A point of light can look a little plain in a night scene, concert image or carefully lit still life. The Tiffen 44STR44 4x4 Star 4PT 4mm Filter is made to give bright highlights a four-point star effect, adding a visible graphic detail to the image. Its 4x4 designation identifies the filter format, while Star 4PT describes the effect it’s intended to create. It suits photographers who want light sources themselves to become part of the composition: think lamps, reflected highlights or small bright details against a darker setting. The effect is deliberate, so this isn’t the filter to choose when you want highlights to stay looking natural. Use it when a four-ray sparkle fits the scene, and keep the brightest points placed where you want the eye to go.
Specialist Note
If bright lights are showing up as plain dots in your frame, this filter gives them a defined four-point sparkle instead. The Star 4PT designation is the key: it shapes highlights into four rays, so it suits night scenes, stage lighting or a still life with a small bright reflection. I’d place a lamp or other point light deliberately in the composition and let the filter make that highlight part of the image. The 4x4 format is useful to know when choosing how to work it into your filter setup. One thing to bear in mind: the star effect is visible, so it’s a creative look rather than a neutral everyday treatment.
