Tiffen SIGSFX18 ARRI Signature Prime Soft FX 1/8 Rear Filter
Tiffen SIGSFX18 ARRI Signature Prime Soft FX 1/8 Rear Filter | Gentle softening for Signature Prime images
When an image feels a little too crisp for the mood you want, this Tiffen Soft FX filter offers a way to soften the rendering without changing your lens choice. It’s a 1/8-strength rear filter named for ARRI Signature Prime lenses, intended for filmmakers who want a gentler image character in selected scenes. Consider it for portraits, close-ups or moments where a harder, more clinical look doesn’t suit the story. The Soft FX designation tells you its purpose: adding a softening effect, rather than serving as a general-purpose protective filter. Its rear-filter format also makes it a specific choice for a Signature Prime setup, not a universal filter to move between any lenses. Choose it when you want that softened character as part of the image itself, and keep a clear filter option available for scenes where you prefer the lens’s unsoftened rendering.
Choosing the look
Use the filter selectively when the scene calls for a softer impression; the 1/8 designation makes this a restrained strength within the Soft FX range. It’s a considered creative choice, not a substitute for a filter intended for another purpose.
Specialist Note
Does the 1/8 strength make the image look heavily softened? No; it’s the restrained Soft FX option, so I’d consider it when you want a gentler character without making that effect the whole point of the shot. The rear-filter format is specific to its ARRI Signature Prime context, which is useful if that’s the lens setup you’re building around, but it isn’t a general front filter for any lens. I’d reach for it for a portrait or a close-up when a harder rendering feels distracting. If you need a clean, unsoftened image for every scene, this isn’t the filter to leave in place by default.
