Urth 55mm CPL Lens Filter Pro

Urth 55mm CPL Lens Filter Pro | Control reflections in-camera

Reflections on a pond or through a shop window can hide the detail you want in the frame. A polarizing filter can reduce reflections from non-metallic surfaces, and can deepen the look of a blue sky when the light and shooting angle are right. The Urth 55mm CPL Lens Filter Pro is for photographers who want to manage those effects while taking the picture, rather than relying solely on editing afterwards. CPL refers to a circular polarizing filter. Its effect is adjustable: turn the filter while looking through the camera and watch how the glare or sky changes. That makes it particularly useful for water, glass and outdoor scenes with a bright sky. The result depends on the angle of the light, so the effect won’t be equally strong in every scene.

Getting the effect you want

For reflections, frame the subject and slowly turn the filter while watching the reflected area. Stop when the reflection is reduced enough to reveal the detail beneath it; removing every reflection isn’t always the most natural-looking result. For a sky, check the view as you turn the filter and choose the look that suits the composition. The change is easiest to judge through the camera, rather than by guessing from the filter’s position. If the light angle doesn’t favour polarization, turning the filter may make little visible difference.
