Urth 55mm Magnetic Ethereal Black Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 55mm Magnetic Ethereal Black Mist Filter Plus+ | Softens highlights with a gentle glow
A bright window in a portrait, or streetlights against a dark evening sky, is where a Black Mist filter can earn its place. The Urth 55mm Magnetic Ethereal Black Mist Filter Plus+ is a creative-effect filter for photographers and filmmakers who want bright areas to bloom softly rather than look sharply defined. That gives portraits a gentler feel and can lend night scenes a more atmospheric look. Its magnetic fitting is intended to make attaching and removing the filter straightforward, so you can choose the effect for a particular scene rather than leave it on for every shot. The 55mm designation makes it relevant to lenses that take 55mm filters. This is a deliberate rendering choice, not a neutral protective filter: the appeal is in the softened highlight look. It suits people who want to shape the mood in-camera and are happy for the result to look less crisp than an unfiltered image.
Specialist Note
Bright highlights take on a softer character with this filter, without needing to create the effect later in editing. The magnetic fitting matters when you want to move between that look and a clean image during a session; you can remove the filter when you’d rather keep fine detail crisp. Its 55mm size is the key practical detail: it’s for a lens that accepts 55mm filters, so it won’t suit every lens in a kit. For a portrait, place a bright window or backlight in the composition; for an evening scene, include a lit sign against darker surroundings. I’d keep it off when accurate, crisp rendering matters more than atmosphere.
