B+W 102 ND Gray 55 E: Extend shutter times in bright light
B+W 102 ND Gray 55 E is a 55 mm neutral-density filter made with Schott NG glass. It’s for photographers who need to reduce the light reaching the camera while keeping the scene’s colours and contrast unaffected. The filter works across the visible spectrum, so its effect is an even reduction in light rather than a shift in colour. That makes it useful for lengthening shutter times in bright conditions: render moving water with a smoother appearance, show movement in passing clouds, or use a slower shutter speed to convey motion in a busy street. In each case, the filter’s role is the same: reduce incoming light so you can use a longer exposure under the same lighting. The defining detail here is its neutral-gray glass and even spectral response, rather than a stated exposure factor. It’s a straightforward option for photographers who want shutter-time control without changing the scene’s colour balance or contrast.
In the field
- Neutral-gray Schott NG glass: The glass reduces light while leaving colours and contrast unaffected. That matters when you want a longer exposure without giving the image a deliberate colour shift.
- Even effect across the visible spectrum: The filter blocks visible light evenly rather than targeting a particular colour. Subjects retain their natural colour relationships as the exposure time increases.
- Reduced light for longer exposures: With less light reaching the camera, shutter times can be longer under the same lighting. This is useful for showing motion in water, clouds or people moving through a scene.
- 55 mm size: The product name identifies this as the 55 mm version. Match that size to the filter fitting you need for your lens.
- Colour and contrast remain unaffected: The filter changes the amount of light, not the scene’s colour or contrast. That keeps its purpose focused on exposure control.
Specialist Note
At midday, a stream can look frozen in a fast exposure; this B+W filter earns its place when you want the water’s movement to read more softly. Its neutral-gray Schott NG glass reduces light evenly, so the longer shutter time comes without a colour or contrast shift. I’d point to the 55 mm version for someone whose lens takes that size, especially for water or passing clouds in bright conditions. The exact shutter speed depends on the scene and exposure you choose, so I wouldn’t promise a particular result from the filter name alone. Its job is clear: reduce light for longer exposures.
