B+W 103 MRC ND Gray 58 | More control over light in bright conditions

The B+W 103 MRC ND Gray 58 gives you a simple way to reduce the light reaching your lens when the scene is too bright for the exposure you want. It suits photographers who want more freedom with shutter speed or aperture in daylight, whether they’re aiming for movement in a water scene or a shallower depth of field in a bright setting. An ND filter doesn’t create either effect by itself: you choose the exposure settings that give you the result, and the filter makes those settings more practical in stronger light. The 58 size is relevant when choosing a filter for a lens; it’s intended for a matching 58 mm filter thread. If you’re after a filter for a particular creative effect rather than light reduction, this isn’t the one to reach for.

Using the ND filter

For a softer look to moving water, select a slower shutter speed and use the filter to help manage the extra light. For portraits in bright conditions, it can give you more room to choose a wider aperture. In either case, set the shutter speed or aperture for the look you want, then adjust exposure for the scene. The filter gives you more control over incoming light; your settings determine how that light is recorded.

Specialist Note

58 is the filter size, so the practical first check is whether your lens has a 58 mm filter thread. The gray ND filter reduces the light entering the lens, which is useful when you want a slower shutter speed for moving water or a wider aperture in daylight. I’d choose the exposure for the effect first, then use the filter to bring the scene within reach of those settings. It suits photographers who want that extra exposure control without changing the look through post-processing. Just remember: the filter won’t choose the shutter speed for you; the motion effect depends on the setting you use.
